Looking at a guidebook of Canada one would find a pristine land (which in a way we did). Traveling on the train through the Canadian wilderness shows the beauty of its landscape. Which was sort of the Toronto we found. Though there was a big difference between the pristine malls of Ontario Place and the futuristic wonders of the Geodesic dome and coming home to a rooming house in a rough suburb.

We flew to Toronto in Canada initially. Toronto was a futuristic city but my auntie turned out to be running a low-life rooming house on the outskirts of the city. The idea, I guess, was that she had a big house that even if it was full of derelicts would have enough space for us.

When I was 11 and a half, we traveled to America and Canada with my brother and sister, mum and dad. The urgency for my parents was that it was the last time I could travel half price. I think my dad had ambitions of going to America to see the extended Lithuanian clan as well my aunty in Toronto.

We’d look out into an otherwise idyllic but deserted streetscape that had this unnerving feeling that all sort of dubious things could be and were going on. The geodesic dome had a plane flight as if you were at the controls. And we were in our Union Jack tracksuits very much the tourists. Similarly, Ontario Place to our eyes was a very upmarket and swanky shopping mall.

Things only started to break down when we were told to take one of the derelicts to guide us around the streets of Toronto. It soon became apparent, he was already (even this early in the morning) quite pissed. Taking us children headlong into four lanes of traffic because ‘the rules of the road are different in Canada’ (as motorists honked their horns and shouted abuse about jaywalking from their passenger windows)  should have been a giveaway. By the time we reached the park mum and dad had managed to lose him.

It was all ice creams and nice things from then on.

We travelled across Canada in the lounge car of the train – supping coca cola, eating pancakes with maple syrup for breakfast and playing a vicious game of poker with other small kids.

In such a way, we high-falutted through the very picturesque mountains of Canada and arrived at Niagra Falls with its Ripley believe it or not museum.

Being hardened travelers, having crossed Canada by the time we got to America we were no longer kids in our tracksuits. Image a panning shoot across a railway carriage seeing the usual people sat there and then a bunch of kids playing poker with cards attached to their heads.

America

We ended up in the french quarter of New Orleans in a hotel with a swimming pool. On the hotel owner’s advice, we ate at the pub opposite. I don’t know who was more surprised to see a family with the three kids in identical Union Jack tracksuits- though the food was great.
